Why did this happen?

Have you ever asked yourself the question: Why did this happen to me? We ask this question especially, when something happens we don’t really like.

What is the answer? I am sure you don’t want my answer to that question. I am sure you want the answer to that important question from someone with authority , from someone with the highest authority.

Here it is:

In John chapter nine we find the story of the man who was blind from birth. The disciples of the Lord were curious to know who sinned, the blind man or the parents of the blind man. What is the answer of the Lord Jesus Christ? The Lord said, and these are his own words, “This happened so that the work of God (John 9:3) might be displayed in his life.” You find this story in John 9:1-12.

A couple of pages further on we find the story of Lazarus in John chapter eleven. Almost the whole chapter is taken up with that exciting story. Read the story in John 11:1-44. What does the creator of the universe say here about this sad happening that causes people to weep? The Lord Jesus Christ says, “This sickness……… is for God’s glory so that God’s Son may be glorified through it.” (John 11:4)

But that is not all. In John 11:15 the Lord says,”and for your sake I am glad I was not there, so that you may believe.”

Let me summarize.

Things are happening in our lifes for the following reasons:

— that we may believe

— for God’s glory

— that the work of God might be displayed in our lifes.
