"THE BOOK OF BOOKS"

“THE BOOK OF BOOKS”

That three Far North authors will be at our bookshop here in town coming Saturday, was announced in our local paper last Thursday.

Today is Saturday and I went to the shop to see the authors and talk to them.

Reading and writing is what I always liked to do and I love books.

Thinking about the authors and books the verse in the Bible where it says:

“Be warned, my son, of anything in addition TO THEM. Of making MANY BOOKS there is no end, and much study wearies the body.” – Ecclesiastes 12:12

(Please read the whole chapter twelve of Ecclesiastes, or even the whole book. I love the book called Ecclesiastes.)

“MANY BOOKS” is opposed to “TO THEM”.

A. “many books”

Here the meaning is  books written by mere humans. Much study of mere human books makes the body weary and the soul does not profit at all.

B. “to them”

“To them,” are the inspired writings we are reading about in this chapter of Ecclesiastes, the whole book of Ecclesiastes, and the whole Bible. The Bible is the only sure source of “admonition”.

I love books, but the book I love most is the Bible. Why? Because the author of the Bible is the Holy Spirit.

FREEDOM

“At home I read everything in sight, including the labels on tinned products such as Edmonds Baking Powder (Sure to Rise) and Bycroft’s Biscuits. I also read labels on tobacco tins such as Desert Gold,” writes Ranginui Walker in his article Retirement – Not an Option.

FREEDOM

FREEDOM

“Take the law off our backs,” I remember reading a number of years ago on a wall in Kaikohe, were we worked as missionaries (United Maori Mission – UMM) for almost twentyfive years.

“There is no freedom without a sense of responsibility,” I remember reading in a Reader’s Digest article many many years ago. It seems that there are things one never forgets, really.

Think about it: “THERE IS NO FREEDOM WITHOUT A SENSE OF RESPONSIBILITY.”

I also seem to read “everything in sight,” not only on paper, but also on walls and everywhere. It comes naturally with me.

SERMON OUTLINE

THE CROSS

THE CROSS

“And now, O Israel,

Deuteronomy 10:12

Intr.:

what does the LORD your God ask of you but

A.  to fear the LORD your God,

B.  to walk in all his ways,

C.  to love him,

D.  to serve the LORD your God with all

a.  your  heart and with all

b.  your soul, and

E.  to observe the LORD’S

a.  commands and

b.  decrees

End;
that I am giving you today
for your own good?”

Who is Speaking?

“We say,” and “You say,” I read in one of our local papers.

And yesterday I saw a very interesting poster, which says, “Mums say …”

Flowers at the Beach

Flowers at the Beach

What do mums say? “Mums say speak up!”

That is obviously a mother on the poster and she says: “Stop my son driving drunk Legend.”

I find the poster interesting, because looking at it the following questions are coming to my mind:

a.  Where is the father of the son? b.  Is it not the duty of the parents to bring up their sons and daughters?

People are saying many things, and we are listening. But are we also listening to what the Lord Jesus Christ says in his word?

He is speaking to us through the Bible.

SIN

That we should not expect too much from a justice system that is seemingly blind to the sins of adults, who produce young offenders, I am reading in one of our local papers, The Northland Age, Tuesday, October 20, 2015. (“Excuses, excuses”)

The BIBLE teaches:

WILD FLOWERS

WILD FLOWERS

“For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” – Romans 3:23

“But the Scripture declares that the whole world is a prisoner of sin.” – Galatians 3:22

“If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us.” – First John 1:8

The Bible teaches that SIN is universal.

Not only the justice system is seemingly blind to sin, the Bible says that all unbelievers are blind to SIN.
