LONDON

Westminster Chapel in Buckingham Gate, London.

A sermon that was preached at Westminster Chapel many years ago has been so far the sermon thahas been the most helpful sermon for my life as a Christian.

The sermon was preached by Dr Lloyd-Jones and you find the sermon in the book:

“SPIRITUAL DEPRESSION

Its Causes and Cure.”

“Selected as one of the most significant contemporary Christian books.”

In the sermon D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones talks about the “tyranny of circumstances,” and says also that “The heart and mind are outside our control.”

All I can say is, “Get hold of the book SPIRITUAL DEPRESSION, and read the sermon.”

The sermon is called “The Peace of God,” and the text is Philippians 4:6 and 7.

“The heart and mind are outside our control.”

“DO NOT BE ANXIOUS ABOUT ANYTHING, BUT IN EVERYTHING, BY PRAYER AND PETITION, WITH THANKSGIVING, PRESENT YOUR REQUESTS TO GOD. AND THE PEACE OF GOD, WHICH TRANSCENDS ALL UNDERSTANDING, WILL GUARD YOUR HEARTS AND YOUR MINDS IN CHRIST JESUS.”  (NIV)

From May until September 1963 I used to live in London at the HQ of WEC International, 19 Highland Road, Upper Norwood. WEC International is a Missionary Society.

I remember one of the candidates taking me to Westminster Chapel in Buckingham Gate to hear D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones. I wish now that I would remember more, but even what I remember is a bit blurred. Too long ago?

Quote

“OUR PRAYERS MAY BE AWKWARD. OUR ATTEMPTS MAY BE FEEBLE. BUT SINCE THE POWER OF PRAYER IS IN THE ONE WHO HEARS IT AND NOT IN THE ONE WHO SAYS IT, OUR PRAYERS DO MAKE A DIFFERENCE. – Max Lucado

Sermon Outline – NT – NIV

The Cross

“As he taught, Jesus said,

Mark 12:38-40

Intr.:

‘Watch out for the teachers of the law.

  1. They like to walk around in flowing robes and
  2. be greeted in the marketplaces, and
  3. have the most important seats in the synagogues and
  4. the places of honor at banquets.
  5. They devour widows’ houses and
  6. for a show make lengthy prayers.

End:

Such men will be punished more severely.'”

WE ARE AS WE THINK

Evil thoughts come out of the heart.

“‘As a man thinketh so is he,’ is really most profound,” says Francis A. Schaeffer.

The Lord Jesus Christ tells us in the Bible that evil thoughts come out of our hearts and they are listed in Mark 7:21 and 22:

“sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery, greed, malice, deceit, lewdness, envy, slander, arrogance and folly.” Please read The Ten Commandments in Exodus chapter twenty.

But we want to follow Paul’s advice in Philippians 4:8. We want to think about things that are: true, noble, right, pure, lovely, admirable, excellent and praiseworthy.

Hear what Mark Twain has to say about doing right:

“ALWAYS DO RIGHT – THAT WILL GRATIFY SOME AND ASTONISH THE REST.”

Evil things come out of the heart.

Are we thinking about such things that are evil or are we thinking about such things that are excellent and praiseworthy?

And F. A. Schaeffer once more:

“I believe people are as they think. The choices we make in the next decade will mold irrevocably the direction of our culture … and the lives of our children.”
