THE PRAYER OF ELIJAH
First Kings 18:36,37
He is praying for FIRE.
We want to notice two things in his prayer.
1. HIS GOAL IS THE GLORY OF GOD AND THE CONVERSION OF ISRAEL.
Twice he asks God to reveal himself as the only living God. This revelation would lead then to the conversion of Israel.
He prays: “…, let it be known today that you are God in Israel …” He prays: “…, answer me, so these people will know that you, O LORD are God, …”
We can ask the Lord for great things as long as we are only after the glory of God and the conversion of sinners. Elijah is teaching us always to start with the first petition of the Lord’s Prayer. There it says, “…, hallowed be your name …” (Matthew 6:9)
2. HE IS PRAYING ACCORDING TO THE WILL OF GOD.
He was absolutely certain that everything he did was in harmony with the will of God. “…, let it be known today … that I am your servant and have done all these things at your command.”
We can only expect the Lord to bless us in all we do, when we are in harmony with His will. The Lord cannot bless us, when we are doing our own thing.
Let us follow the footsteps of Elijah.
