Sermon Outline NT (NIV)

“For I resolved to know nothing

while I was with

you

except Jesus Christ and

him crucified.”

First Corinthians 2:2

BUT THE WISDOM

James 3:17

Intr.:

that comes from heaven is first of all:

1. pure;

2. then peace-loving,

3. considerate,

4. submissive,

5. full of mercy and

6. good fruit,

7. impartial and

8. sincere.”

End:

Attitude again!

The owner does not want people with bad attitude on his premises. What else do I remember? He does not want liquor either and people who are drunk and no dogs.

How do I know that? Easy, there is a notice on the door of the entrance.

Attitude again!

And this is what the BIBLE, the Word of the Living God has to say about attitude:

nothing

while I was with you

except Jesus Christ and him

crucified.”

First Corinthians 2:2

“YOUR ATTITUDE SHOULD BE THE SAME AS THAT OF  CHRIST JESUS:

Philippians 2:5-11

Intr.:

Who, being in the very nature God,

A. did not

consider equality with God something to be grasped,

B. but

1. made himself nothing,

2. taking the very nature of a servant,

3. being made in human likeness.

4. And being found in  appearance as a man,

5. he humbled himself and

6. became obedient to death-

7. even death on a cross!

C. Therefore

1. God exalted him to the highest place

2. and gave him the name  that is above every name,

3. that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow,

a. in heaven and

b. on earth and

c. under the earth,

4. and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ  is LORD,

End:

“TRUSTWORTHY SAYINGS.”

Intr.:

1. First Timothy 1:15

“Here is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance:

Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners.”

2. First Timothy 4:8-9

“Godliness has value for all things, holding promise  for both the present life and the life to come.

This is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance.”

3. Second Timothy 2:12

“Here is a trustworthy saying…….

if we endure, we will also reign with him;”

4. Titus 3:8

“This is a trustworthy saying……..

that those who have trusted in God may be careful to devote themselves to doing what is good.”

End:

What is the MESSAGE ……….. for the DRINKERS?

WHAT IS THE MESSAGE…… FOR DRINKERS?

“Drinking should not be regarded as an activity but merely a pleasant part of social life.” That is the message the columnist  has for drinkers in the local paper, The Northland Age, Thursday, October 21, 2010.  Because she continues to write, “How can we bring this message home to our teenagers?”

She has some suggestions: Start education the children when they are very young, frighten them with “the mangled cars, the diseased livers, the vomiting teenagers, the old derelicts in the streets, the facts about alcohol as a poison.”  Her message for the  teenagers bingeing now is, “Take away their money, their cars, their freedom.”

ABSTINENCE, NOT TEMPERANCE

________________________________________________

In the same paper is also a letter to the editor: “Drinking and driving.” We are confronted with alcohol wherever we go. So it seems. I mentioned already the article in a church magazine called “How to change our drinking culture?” In the article we are told that there are  about 700,000 heavy drinkers in New Zealand. New Zealand has a population of 4,2 Million. That means that almost 20 % of the people living in New Zealand are heavy drinkers. But let us remember that the problem of drinking is worldwide.

I have to come back to the columnist mentioned at the the beginning. She says also:  “I believed that my children would learn to drink in a civilised fashion if they occasionaly had a small glass of wine or beer with the family. IT DID NOT WORK.”

Is she not saying that her message does not work?

TEMPERANCE DOES NOT WORK!

What works?

The answer is ABSTINENCE. ABSTINENCE WORKS! Why? Because it is the answer of the Bible, the Word of the Living God.

Let me ask here a question very quick: WHAT TYPE OF WINE DID THE LORD JESUS CHRIST MAKE IN JOHN  2:9?

What does God say about liquor indulgence? Proverbs 20:1:  “Wine is a mocker, strong drink is raging: and whosoever is deceived thereby is not wise.” This verse says that only fools consume liquor. Read also the following verses from the Word of God: Proverbs 23:29-35; Genesis 9:21.

This is what great men have said about alcohol:

“Alcohol is a poison men take into the mouth, to steal away the brain.”  – Shakespeare  “Strong drink is more destructive than war, pestilence  and famine.” – Gladstone.  “Drunkenness has killed more men than all of history’s wars.” –  General Pershing.  “The most criminal and artistic method of assassination ever invented by the bravos of any age or nation.” – Ruskin

Here is another question for you: Why do people consume alcoholic beverages?

SERMON OUTLINE

Let me close with a SERMON OUTLINE by Rev. William McCarrell. I found the outloine in the book One Hundred Bible Lessons by Alban Douglas.

Rev. W. McCarrell outlines his Lesson on liquor this way:  Liquor indulgence is wrong because it:

Intr.:

1. Leads to other sins – Deuteronomy 21:18; Deuteronomy 21:20 (disobedience, disrespect, stubbornness).

2. Aids in breaking homes – Deuteronomy 21:18-21.

3. Leads from the seemingly harmless to chronic drunkards – Deuteronomy 21:20.

4. Brings severe judgment – Deuteronomy 21:21.

5. Because it is costly – Deuteronomy 21:18-21.

6. Because it is linked with debauchery- Proverbs 23:20 (winebibbing , riotous fleshliness).

7. Tends to poverty – Proverbs 23:21 (Eventually, if not immediately).

8. Causes one to miss God’s kingdom –  First Corinthians 6:9-10

End:

I have here in my hand a little booklet with travel information you can trust published by Jasons Travel Media Ltd called “A Taste of New Zealand.” Yes, Unique Artisans, Local produce, Culinary Experiences are mentined, but WINERIES come first. Please let me know if I am wrong, but I think the whole little booklet is full of wineries.

TEMPTATION

James 1:13-15

Intr.:

“When  tempted,…………..

1. …; but each one is tempted when, by his own evil desire,

a. he is dragged away and

b. enticed.

Then, after desire has

2. conceived,

it gives birth to

3. sin;

and sin, when it is full- grown, gives birth to

4. death.”

End:

“Global Hand-Washing Day on October 15”

“GLOBAL HAND-WASHING DAY ON OCTOBER 15”

We are told in the local paper (Northern News, October 13, 2010) that proper hand-washing to prevent the spreading of diseases has become of critical importance.

Basically the message of UNICEF (acronym for United Nations Children’s Fund) is to set up the hand-washing habit in children at an early age.

The BIBLE, the Word of the Living God, has also a message for us and our hands. The BIBLE tells us also to wash our hands. Why? Because our hands are full of blood.

SERMON OUTLINE – OT (NIV)

“YOUR HANDS ARE FULL OF BLOOD;

Isaiah 1:15-17

Intr.:

1. wash and make yourselves clean.

2. Take your evil deeds out of my sight!

3. Stop doing wrong,

4. learn to do right!

5. Seek justice,

6. encourage the oppressed.

7. Defend the cause of the fatherless,

8. plead the case of the widow.”

End:

In  James 4:8 we read: “Wash your hands, you sinners,…..” Wash your hands. Cleanse your hands – the outward instrument of action. Who can ascend into the hill of the Lord? Only the cleanhanded can ascend into the hill of the Lord. Only the cleanhanded can do that. Psalm 24:3 “Who may ascend the hill of the Lord? Who may stand in his holy place?  He who has clean hands and a pure heart,…”

Only the justified through Jesus can do that. What does it mean to be justified? 1. Sinful man is forgiven. 2. Sinful man is declared righteous. 3. Sinful man is freed through faith from the penalty of his sin.

Justification is a gracious divine act.
