“Street Tribe” and “Teach me the rules and I’ll show you how to break them,” I saw written today on T-shirts worn by teenagers.

All this is from memory of course and as you well know, if you want to read stuff that is written on T-shirts, you must look hard, not to miss it. That’s why I am intending to go into a T-shirt shop to have a proper look at the writings on T-shirts. Should be quite interesting.

When I read “Teach me the rules and I’ll show you how to break them”, the ten commandments (Exodus* chapter 20- Exodus 20:1-17) came to my mind straight away and also chapter 28 of the book of Deuteronomy**, the Word of the Living God. In chapter 28 it talks about the Blessings of Obedience and the Curses of Disobedience. Deuteronomy 28:1-68

I think chapter 28 of the book of Deuteronomy is one of the most powerful chapters in the whole of the Word of God. Go and read it now for yourself!

But listen to what it says at the beginning of chapter six in the book of Deuteronomy about the commandments of the Lord: Deuteronomy 6:4-9

— The commandments are to be upon our hearts.

— We are to impress them on our children.

— We must talk about them, when we sit at home.

— We must talk about them, when we walk along the road.

— We must talk about them, when we lie down.

— We must talk about them, when we get up.

— We must tie them as symbols on our hands.

— We must bind them on our foreheads.

— We must write them on the doorframes of our houses.

— We must write them on the gates of our houses.

WE MUST WRITE THEM ON THE FRONT OF OUR T-SHIRTS! WE MUST WRITE THEM ON THE BACK OF OUR T-SHIRTS!

But we are doing the opposite and harming ourselves. Read Deuteronomy 10:12-13

…, and to observe the Lord’s commands and decrees that I am giving you today FOR YOUR OWN GOOD?

*Exodus means “exit” or “departure.” Deuteronomy means “second law.”

“AH, HOW GOOD IT FEELS, THE HAND OF A FRIEND.” I am reading that on a greeting card which is in my hand. On top of that is written “Friendship”. On another card you can find the Japanese Proverb “With a friend at your side no road seems too long”.

You can find a lot of greeting cards talking about friendship. There seems to be a longing for a friend in all of us. Am I right? Just two more thoughts I read on cards: “They say friends are hard to find, luckily I know where you are.” ” Good friends are like stars, you don’t always see them. But you always know they are there.”

Yes, there is a longing for a friend in all of us. It is a joy for me to tell you about my friend, my best friend. My best friend is the Lord Jesus Christ. There is even a song about my best friend. The hymn is written by Joseph Scriven and this is verse three:

Are we weak and heavy-laden, cumbered with a load of care? Precious Saviour, still our refuge-take it to the Lord in prayer. DO THY FRIENDS DESPISE, FORSAKE THEE? Take it to the Lord in prayer; in His arms He’ll take and shield thee-thou wilt find a solace there.

I hope you have noticed the words “DO THY FRIENDS DESPISE, FORSAKE THEE?”

And these are now the words of my best friend. They are recorded in His Word and He Himself says to me, “Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends. You are my friends if you do what I command. I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master’s business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you.”

“CHRIST, WHO IS YOUR LIFE.”– Colossians 3:4 I am reading just now on the tenth of August in the devotional book by CH Spurgeon called “Morning and Evening.” As some of you probably know that are Daily Readings.

“Christ, who is your life.” That reminds me of something I read some time ago.

I am talking now about Dilmah tea. “The founder’s story is in every pack of Dilmah tea.” In his story he says,”TEA IS OUR LIFE.” On the pack of Dilmah tea I read also, “Dilmah is a very special tea. Its founder has dedicated his life to tea, and he has mastered the art of making tea. He guides his family business with care, pride and passion. You can’t beat that!!”

Are we as Christians not challenged by business people like that and want to say,

“CHRIST IS MY LIFE!

“MY LIFE IS DEDICATED TO CHRIST!

“I WANT TO SERVE THE LORD JESUS CHRIST WITH PASSION!”

And believe it or not, but I am drinking now a cup of the “very special tea.” (Dilmah)

McDonald’s ist ja weltbekannt. Auch ist es nun schon etliche Jahre her, als ich las, dass es in der ganzen Welt 23 346 McDonald’s Essensstaetten gibt, die weltweit in 110 Laendern verstreut sind. Es sind jetzt bestimmt noch mehr!

Auch las ich damals, dass alle sechs Stunden ein neues Restaurant irgendwo in der Welt eroeffnet wird. Fast unglaublich, aber es ist eine Tatsache.

Auch waren in dem Artikel 8 Tatsachen aufgefuehrt. Nur eine Tatsache will ich erwaehnen, weil sie mich wirklich aufgeruettelt hat. Es wird gesagt, dass Menschen um die Bedeutung der Goldenen Boegen wissen. Auch wird gesagt, dass die Menschen um die Bedeutung des Kreuzes wissen. Aber dann vergleicht man die Goldenen Boegen von McDonald’s mit dem Kreuz der Christen und sagt, dass es mehr Menschen gibt, die um die Bedeutung der Goldenen Boegen von McDonald’s wissen.

Vielleicht wissen Sie auch um die Bedeutung der Goldenen Boegen, aber die Bedeutung des Kreuzes, woran unser Heiland fuer uns starb, ist Ihnen unbekannt. Ja, McDonald’s sorgt fuer unseren Leib. Aber wir haben ja auch noch eine Seele und der Herr Jesus Christus sagt: “Was huelfe es dem Menschen, so er die ganze Welt gewoenne und naehme doch Schaden an seiner Seele?” (Siehe Matthaeus 16:26) Auch sagt der Herr weiter: “Der Mensch lebt nicht vom Brot allein, sondern von einem jeglichen Wort das durch den Mund Gottes geht.” (Siehe Matthaeus 4:4)

Das Wort, das aus dem Mund Gottes kommt, sagt uns, dass wir Suender sind. Wir brauchen Vergebung.

Der Direktor einer Anstalt fuer Geisteskranke in London sagte einmal zu einem weltbekannten Evangelisten: “Wenn die Patienten hier um die Vergebung ihrer Schuld wuessten, dann koennte ich die Haelfte entlassen.”

Vom Kreuz ruft uns der Sohn Gottes zu: ” Es ist vollbracht!” (Siehe Johannes 19:30) Unsere Schuld, unsere Suende, braucht uns nicht mehr zu bedruecken. Die Strafe fuer unsere Suende wurde am Kreuz bezahlt. Vom Kreuz hoeren wir die Worte: Da ist Vergebung fuer deine Suende. Und da ist auch Vergebung fuer meine Schuld. Das Heil ist eine Geschenk. Wir muessen es nur annehmen. Johannes 1:12 sagt: “Wie viele ihn aber aufnahmen, denen gab er Macht, Gottes Kinder zu werden…”

Dann koennen wir mit dem Liederdichter Ludwig Heinrich Donner singen:

Am Kreuze hat der Herr vollbracht,

was arme Suender selig macht.

Darauf vertrau und baue ich

und weih ihm in der Taufe mich.

An einem schoenen Sonnentag im August stehe ich auf der Treppe vor unserem Haus und was sehe ich da? Da ist doch ein kleiner bunter Fink nicht weit von mir entfernt, der an irgendetwas herumpickt. Und wie er da sein Fruehstueck verzehrt mit ganz grossem Appetit. Ich bin erstaunt! Aber nach einigen Minuten ist er satt und fliegt weiter. Ich gehe naeher hin, wo der Vogel sass, und da ist wirklich ein Stueckchen Brot uebriggeblieben. Wie es da ganz am Anfang ueberhaupt hingekommen ist, kann ich nicht sagen.

Schon waehrend ich den Vogel beobachte, kommen mir Worte aus der Bibel in den Sinn. Auch bemerke ich, dass der Fink sich nicht kuemmert um das, was uebrig bleibt. Er laesst es einfach liegen. Fuer andere! In Matthaeus 6:26 sagt der Herr Jesus: “Sehet die Voegel des Himmels an: sie saeen nicht und ernten nicht und sammeln nichts in Scheuern, und euer himmlischer Vater ernaehrt sie doch. Seid ihr denn nicht viel mehr wert als sie?”

Ja, an dem Morgen sah ich mir den kleinen, schoenen Fink an. Der Vogel hat keine Ahnung vom Brotmachen. Er hat auch keine Vorratskammer. Aber er hatte Hunger und sein Fruehstueck fuer den besagten Morgen schmeckte ihm sehr gut. Ist das nicht wunderbar?

Und nun sagt der Herr weiter, dass wir viel mehr wert sind als dieser kleine Fink.

Schon viele haben das erfahren . Ich gehoere auch zu den Vielen.

Der kleine Fink, den ich an dem Morgen beobachtet habe, erinnert mich aber auch noch an ein anderes Bibelwort aus dem Alten Testament, wo es heisst in Sprueche 30:8,9: “Armut und Reichtum gib mir nicht! lass mich den mir zukommenden Teil von Nahrung verzehren, damit ich nicht aus Uebersaettigung dich verleugne und sage: ‘Wer ist der Herr?’ aber auch nicht infolge der Armut zum Diebe werde und den Namen Gottes entehre.”
