“NAME A BOOK YOU THINK EVERYONE SHOULD READ.”

I looked through the newspaper today – 05. 10. 2008 – and came to the page where something was written about books. I was immediately interested, because I love books and reading. The article was called “bedside table”. A person was asked ten questions about books.

One question was ,”Name a BOOK you think everyone should read.” A certain book was mentioned. I don’t remember the exact title.

I think of course that the book everyone should read is the BIBLE.

You ask me,”Why?”

Here is the answer, “For a long time the Bible was for me LIKE ANY OTHER BOOK. But my mother prayed for me. The day came, when the Lord Jesus Christ became my personal Saviour. From that day on I knew the author of the Bible and the Bible became A LIVING BOOK for me. But all this is only possible by REVELATION.”

THE TROUBLES OF A TRUANT

I had the privilege to learn the english language from an early age. I remember that one lesson was called “The Troubles of a Truant”. Truancy is still very much alive. You only need to open the newspapers.

Are we not going to school until we die?

As born again believers we are attending the SCHOOL OF OUR LORD AND SAVIOUR JESUS CHRIST. And I hope we don’t play the truant.

The Lord is our teacher. And sometimes we feel, that the Lord is putting a burden upon us. And he actually does. We do think of course, that the burden from the Lord is doing us harm. Our heart does not really understand. But the Lord has a very good reason for putting a burden upon us. He is our shepherd. And he is a good shepherd. But sometimes he is leading us through deep valleys and dark valleys without a ray of light. But the Lord knows exactly what we need. He knows, what is good for us.

But we don’t like burdens. At least I don’t. We want to do away with them. I want to shake off my burdens. Is that not natural? We want to run away from under them. I don’t want to go to school. I rather play the truant.

Let us read together Hebrews 10:36: ” YOU NEED TO PERSEVERE SO THAT WHEN YOU HAVE DONE THE WILL OF GOD, YOU WILL RECEIVE WHAT HE HAS PROMISED.”

It has been pointed out to me, that the word persevere in the Greek language means “To Remain Under”. The first New Testament was written in the Greek language.

Let us “remain under” the burden as our Lord “remained under” the burden and died for us!

BEST READING

Today is Friday, October 3, 2008 and I have “The Business Herald” in front of me. It says on the front page “Latest News + Week’s Best Reading”.

And on the front page it also says,”THE SQUEEZE IS ON”. “Crisis gets real for New Zealand business.” On page four another crisis is reported, ” Financial crisis creams Fonterra’s milk powder price.”

For me the BIBLE is not only the week’s best reading, but also the year’s best reading. And that is true for every new year to come.

The BIBLE is full of precious promises. One promise is this: John 14:1-4

INTERNATIONAL DAY OF OLDER PEOPLE – 01. 10. 2008

AGE CONCERN – Serving the Needs of older People – celebrated the Day today here in Kaitaia in the Far North Community Centre from 10.00 AM – 3.00 PM.

The Expo was called “Health and Savety in the HOME.”

When I saw the banner “AGE CONCERN” in front of the Community Centre the following verse from the BIBLE came to my mind.

Isaiah 46:4 *

Even to your old age and gray hairs I am he, I am he who will sustain you. I have made you and I will carry you; I will sustain you and I will rescue you.

WHAT A GOLDEN NUGGET!

1. I will sustain you

2. I will carry you

I will sustain you (second time) Do we ever need sustaining when we get older!

3. I will rescue you

It was really good that I had that verse on my mind, because one corner of the EXPO was ‘deadly’. There was information about: Parkinson’s desease, Alzheimers, Stroke Symptoms, Arthritis etc.

A preacher in the Baptist Church in Kerikeri said some time ago,” Old age is not for sissies.” I will remember that always.

* Three points for a sermon!
