“Paradise….” “Paradise…”

Today I opened the local paper, “The Northland Age”, and there is a beautiful picture of “Paradise Bay” on page two. I don’t think I have ever been there. One more place to go to. That reminds me also of a mailer I picked up some time ago. It is a Warehouse mailer and on two pages you can find the “Gaming Paradise.” There are pictures of ……. things I don’t really know much about.

There are certain words we come across again and again. “Paradise” is one of course. And the word “FUTURE.”

Also today I came across the word “independence” several times. That seems to be also a word which is on the mind of many people. For example “Treasure your independence” I am reading in one paper for the older generation. A leaflet about medical alarms mentions independence (independent) at least twice. Then I have another booklet here and the word independence is mentioned at least three times, so far as I can see. (Twice on one page!)

A SEMINAR ON POSITIVE AGEING

Presbyterian Support Northern presents:

Getting On with Getting Older

The SEMINAR was today at the Kaitaia Union Church.

We were given a Seminar Evaluation Form with eight questions and comments are welcome.

I really have to think hard about the seminar, before I make any comments! That’s all for NOW!

*****

10. July 2009:

Let me just say how the seminar ended:

— We were given a poem by Jenny Joseph called: “Warning-When I am an old woman I shall wear purple.”

I can send you a copy, if you want one!

— On the last page of our notes you can read this:

“Life is not about dawdling to the grave, arriving safely in an attractive, wrinkle free body, but rather an adventure that ends skidding in sideways, champagne in one hand strawberries in the other totally worn out screaming ‘yeehaaa’ what a ride.” – Anonymous

Isaiah 46:4

“EVEN TO YOUR OLD AGE AND GRAY HAIRS I AM HE, I AM HE WHO WILL SUSTAIN YOU. I HAVE MADE YOU AND I WILL CARRY YOU; I WILL SUSTAIN YOU AND I WILL RESCUE YOU.”

I needed the reminder…….

I needed the reminder ….. to be thankful!

Strange things are still happening. This was for the first time that I saw the cross-stitch hanging on the wall of our bedroom. Probably it has been hanging there already for a long time. Many years ago my daughter used to work on cross – stitches. But I can not find her initials on this one. – But I will find out all about this cross – stitch!

“LET US GIVE THANKS”P1070789

That reminds me actually of a German Proverb. It is a rhyme and goes like this: “Loben zieht nach oben, danken schuetzt vor wanken.” The meaning of the rhyme is: Praise pulls you heavenwards and being thankful keeps you from losing your balance, from tottering.

The Bible, the Word of the Living God, has a lot to say about being thankful, thankfulness and thanksgiving. I read a good number of verses today. The Psalms are saying quite a bit about being thankful.

I came also to First Thessalonians 5:18, where it says: “…; give thanks in all circumstances,…” That is quite a challenge!

I like First Thessalonians 5:16-18 very much. It is a really good sermon outline:

WHAT IS GOD’S WILL FOR US IN CHRIST JESUS?

Intr.: for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus:

A. Be joyful always;

B. pray continually;

C. give thanks in ALL circumstances,

“A happy person is not a person in a certain set of circumstances, but rather a person with a certain set of attitudes.” – Hugh Downs

Earlier on I said that that is quite a challenge. NO, it is not a challenge, it is the WILL OF GOD!

Do you find it difficult, to give thanks in ALL circumstances? Read again the well known verse Romans 8:28. Read also Hebrews 12:1-13. The headline for these verses in my Bible is “God Disciplines His Sons.”

At the very beginning I said I needed the reminder to be thankful. Do you think you need the reminder as well? Please let me know!
