“A SPECIAL FRIEND, …”

Reading “A special friend, my dad,” today on the cloth book marker in my Bible, made me think again of my best friend.

THE BIBLE: I am reading about my best friend in the Bible.

In Luke 12:4 the Lord Jesus Christ says, “‘I tell you, my friends, do not be afraid of those who kill the body and after that can do no more.'” In John chapter 15 in the verses 14 and 15 the Lord Jesus Christ says that he calls us no longer servants but friends. In John 15:14 we read, “‘You are my friends if you do what I command.'”

Why is the change of relationship from servants to friends so significant? It is significant because of what friends are able to share.

One of my favorite hymns is, “WHAT A FRIEND WE HAVE IN JESUS, …”

In the hymn Joseph M Scriven, the author, encourages us again and again to share everything with the Lord Jesus Christ. He tells us to “carry everything to God in prayer.” He says also that it is “a privilege to carry everything to God in prayer.” That means our sins, our griefs, our trials, our temptations, our troubles, our discouragements, our sorrows, our weaknesses, everything,

The wedding date of Joseph Scriven, the author of the hymn, was set. But the girl he was going to marry drowned on the night before. Joseph Scriven realized that only the Lord Jesus Christ could help him in his sorrow.

He is the author of the hymn, but he says, “The Lord and I did it  between us.”

My best friend is also the Lord Jesus Christ,

Dwight L. Moody says, “A rule I have had for years is: to treat the Lord Jesus Christ as a personal friend. He is not a creed, a mere doctrine, but it is He Himself we have.”
