“An eye for an eye …”
“An eye for an eye only ends up making the whole world blind.” – Mahatma Gandhi
“You have heard that it was said, An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth. But I say to you, Do not resist the evil man [who injures you]; but if any one strikes you on the right jaw or cheek, turn to him the other one too; ” – Matthew 5:38, 39 (The Amplified Bible)
“ONLY HAVE 10% DEPOSIT?”
“Only have 10% deposit?”
That is the question on the front page of the brochure I picked up at the local Post Office and I want to answer that question.
Underneath the question readers are encouraged with this sentence, “Think outside the box with Kiwibank and you could get into your first home.”
My answer to the above question is, “No, I don’t think I have 10% deposit.”
But here is what I have:
I have a home which the greatest Builder of the universe has been building for me. My home will never need to be repaired. (The house I am living in now has a leaking water pipe at the moment and I am waiting for the plumber to come and repair the pipe.) My home cannot be destroyed by floods and by fire.
My dwelling stands in a land where no evil person can enter and no bolts will ever be needed for its doors.
My home is in the city of gold!
Now I have told you about my last home, my eternal home.
Nobody asked for a deposit for my last and final home, not even 10%. I did not buy my last home. It was given to me free of charge.
But the Lord Jesus Christ bought it for me at a tremendous sacrifice.
“HIDEAWAYS”
“Hideaways of the rich and famous,” is the headline of our national newspaper today.
Reading that just now on the board in front of the dairy in the centre of Kaitaia reminds me of my hideaway and please let me tell you about it.
In his letter to the Colossians the apostle Paul tells the believers that their “life is now hidden with Christ in God.”
In the Psalms David tells us the following:
He says that the Lord is his hiding place.
He also prays to the Lord to hide him in the shadow of his wings.
And he knows also that the Lord will hide him in the shelter of his tabernacle in the day of trouble.
He says also that he is hiding himself in the Lord.
As believer in the Lord Jesus Christ I know that my “life is now hidden with Christ in God.”
And no, I did not buy a paper to read about the hideaways of the rich and famous, but I picked up my Bible to read what the Word of God says about my hiding place.
And remember, I do not need to drive to my hideaway; my hideaway is always with me.

“SAVING LIVES AT SEA”
“Let me drop everything and work on your problem!” I read on a coaster not long ago. Today I am reading about people who do that.
From an application form for Coastguard Membership I am learning that Coastguard is there to answer calls from people who get into difficulty on the water 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days of the year.
In his first letter Peter says in the Bible, ” Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope you have.”
This verse is teaching that disciples of the Lord Jesus Christ are there to answer everyone who asks to give the reason for the hope they have always, 12 or more hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.
On the application form for Coastguard Membership is says, “Coastguard Volunteers are ready to drop everything and risk their lives to save those in need.”
The Bible says that we must be prepared always and that we must answer with gentleness and respect. And we must also keep a clear conscience.
